Stoic roots
A practice older than the watch.
Memento mori goes back to ancient Rome. Stoic philosophers used it as a daily exercise — not to dwell on death, but to sharpen how you live. Seneca wrote about it. Marcus Aurelius carried it through his campaigns. It is one of the core practices of Stoicism.
Most people practice it in their head, or in a journal. A watch does something those can't. You wear it. You glance at it a hundred times a day without thinking. Every glance carries the reminder with it — the skull at twelve, the hourglass at six, the seconds moving between them.
